Semaglutide

Semaglutide is an injectable GLP-1 peptide receptor agonist. GLP-1 agonists work by mimicking the effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone produced by the intestines in response to food intake. GLP-1 is known to stimulate insulin secretion from the pancreas, reduce glucagon secretion, and slow down gastric emptying.

In addition to its effects on insulin and glucagon secretion, GLP-1 also acts on the brain to reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness, leading to a reduction in food intake and weight loss.

It is usually given as an injection once a week. By incorporating Semaglutide into your diet and exercise routine, you can make great strides in your weight loss goals and improve your overall health and well-being.

Tirzepatide vs Semaglutide

  • Both are classified as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which means they work by mimicking the effects of a naturally occurring hormone in the body that helps regulate blood sugar and appetite.
  • Both medications have been shown to be very effective in promoting weight loss in clinical trials
  • Tirzepatide is known as a dual-acting peptide, since it is a GLP-1 and a GIP receptor agonist
  • Tirzepatide is a newer medication and has been shown to be more effective in promoting weight loss compared to semaglutide (in clinical trials, patients taking tirzepatide lost on average about twice as much weight as patients taking semaglutide).

Semaglutide in Weston, FL — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy/Rybelsus) medical weight loss at DMHealth, our Weston clinic, and Florida telehealth.

What is semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus)?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, a medication that mimics glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone your intestines release after you eat. It stimulates insulin secretion, reduces glucagon, slows gastric emptying, and acts on the brain to reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness. It is sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, both once-weekly injections, and as Rybelsus, a daily oral tablet. At DMHealth it is prescribed only after a medical evaluation by our provider.

Is semaglutide FDA-approved?

Yes. The FDA approved Ozempic for type 2 diabetes in 2017, Rybelsus, the oral tablet form, for type 2 diabetes in 2019, and Wegovy for chronic weight management in adults in 2021. Any use outside an approved indication is determined by your provider on an individual basis.

How is semaglutide different from tirzepatide?

Semaglutide activates one gut-hormone receptor, GLP-1. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound) activates two, GIP and GLP-1. Your DMHealth provider helps determine which medication is more appropriate for your health history and goals.

Who is a candidate for semaglutide at DMHealth?

Candidacy is decided during a medical consultation and depends on your BMI, health history, current medications, and goals. Semaglutide is not appropriate for everyone; our provider reviews your history and any needed labs before prescribing.

Can I get semaglutide through telehealth in Florida?

Yes. You complete an online intake and a telehealth consultation with our provider, we review your medical history and any needed lab work, and if appropriate, a personalized plan is prescribed with ongoing follow-up. All care is led by Diana Medina, MMS, PA-C and supervised by our Medical Director, Luis Campillo, MD, and telehealth is available to patients anywhere in Florida.

What are the common side effects of semaglutide?

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal, such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, or reduced appetite, and often ease over time. Your provider reviews risks, side effects, and how to manage them before you start.
